Golden Circle in One Day – The Perfect Day Trip from Reykjavík
Iceland's most famous route in one day: Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss. With insider tips, schedule, and bonus stops for your perfect Golden Circle trip.
The Golden Circle is Iceland's classic route — and for good reason. In roughly 255 km from Reykjavík, you'll experience three of the country's most spectacular natural wonders: Þingvellir National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Geysir geothermal area with the active Strokkur, and the mighty Gullfoss waterfall. The best part: you only need one day, a regular rental car, and this guide.
What is the Golden Circle?
The Golden Circle is a loop route in southwest Iceland connecting three highlights that couldn't be more different:
Þingvellir National Park: This is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart — you can literally walk between two continents. Plus a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Öxarárfoss waterfall, and the crystal-clear Silfra fissure.
Geysir Geothermal Area: The original Geysir, which gave all geysers their name, has been dormant for years. But its neighbour Strokkur reliably erupts every 5–10 minutes, shooting a water column up to 30 metres into the sky.
Gullfoss: Iceland's most famous waterfall plunges in two massive steps over 32 metres into a narrow canyon. On sunny days you'll see rainbows in the spray; in winter, the edges transform into bizarre ice formations.
The entire route is paved and driveable year-round. With the bonus stops we'll cover below, this day trip becomes an unforgettable experience.
The Optimal Schedule
With this itinerary you'll get the most out of your Golden Circle day — including three bonus stops that most tour buses skip.
08:00 — Depart from Reykjavík. Take Route 1 toward Selfoss and turn onto Route 36 to Þingvellir. The drive takes about 45 minutes. Fill up beforehand — fuel prices in Reykjavík are cheaper than in the countryside.
09:00–10:30 — Þingvellir National Park. Park at P1 (main car park, 750 ISK) and walk through the Almannagjá gorge to the ancient parliament site. Continue to Öxarárfoss — a picturesque waterfall many visitors miss. Plan for 90 minutes. Tip: Silfra snorkelling must be booked weeks ahead (approx. 22,000 ISK).
11:00–12:00 — Geysir Geothermal Area. About 50 minutes from Þingvellir via Routes 365 and 37. Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes — you won't miss it. Position yourself on the south side (wind usually comes from the north). The original Geysir next door looks like an innocent pool — but read the info board, the story is fascinating.
12:00–12:45 — Lunch. Geysir Bistro serves solid soups and sandwiches (2,000–4,000 ISK). Alternative: Gullfoss Café, known for the best lamb soup in the area (2,500 ISK).
13:00–14:00 — Gullfoss. Just 10 minutes from Geysir. Take time for both viewing platforms: the upper one gives you the overview, the lower one gets you close enough to feel the spray. Rain jacket essential — you will get wet.
14:30–15:30 — Bonus: Keríð Crater Lake. On the way back, detour to Keríð — a 3,000-year-old volcanic crater with a vivid turquoise lake. Entry just 3,000 ISK (~20 EUR), 20 minutes for the rim walk. The red lava walls and blue water are a photographer's dream.
15:30–16:30 — Bonus: Friðheimar Greenhouse. This greenhouse grows tomatoes using geothermal energy — even in winter. The tomato soup (2,890 ISK) is legendary, unlimited refills, served with fresh bread. Icelandic horses right next door. Reservation recommended.
16:30–17:30 — Bonus: Secret Lagoon in Flúðir. Iceland's oldest natural hot spring (since 1891), just 5 minutes from Friðheimar. Far more relaxed and authentic than the Blue Lagoon, at less than half the price (3,200 ISK). Northern Lights chance in winter.
18:00 — Back in Reykjavík. Return via Route 1 takes about 90 minutes. Visiting in summer? You'll still have hours of daylight — perfect for a stroll by Harpa or dinner on Laugavegur.
Insider Tips for the Golden Circle
These tips will keep you one step ahead of the tour buses:
Drive counterclockwise. Most buses go clockwise (Þingvellir → Geysir → Gullfoss). Reverse the route and you'll have fewer crowds at every stop — especially at Gullfoss in the morning.
Start early. Large tour groups arrive from 10:30. Leaving at 8 AM means Þingvellir is almost empty. Gullfoss car park fills from 11 AM.
Weather app is essential. Check vedur.is each morning — Iceland's weather changes hourly. Layer up: thermal base, fleece, wind/waterproof outer shell.
Fuel up in Selfoss. N1 or Orkan in Selfoss is the last affordable fuel stop before Geysir. Tip: The N1 app saves 5–10 ISK per litre.
Silfra requires advance booking. Snorkelling the Silfra fissure is one of Iceland's most unique experiences — book weeks ahead, especially in summer. Operators: DIVE.is or Arctic Adventures. Dry suit included, visibility over 100 metres.
Bonus Stops Worth Making
The Golden Circle has more than its three headliners. These stops are all on or near the route:
Keríð Crater Lake: Volcanic crater with turquoise lake. 3,000 ISK entry, 20 min rim walk. Best in sunshine. Right on Route 35.
Friðheimar: Geothermal greenhouse with the famous unlimited tomato soup (2,890 ISK). Eat surrounded by tomato plants and bees. Horse show next door.
Secret Lagoon (Gamla Laugin): Iceland's oldest natural hot spring in Flúðir. 3,200 ISK entry, far more relaxed than Blue Lagoon. Northern Lights chance in winter. 5 min from Friðheimar.
Bruarfoss: "Iceland's bluest waterfall" — vivid turquoise glacial water. 3.5 km hike from car park (~45 min round trip). Less known, incredibly photogenic.
